Biophilic Holism

Frameworks for Impactful Spaces

Overview

Explore the research and guiding principles of biophilia with biophilic design expert Elizabeth Calabrese, AIA. Biophilic Holism explains the origin and meaning of the word biophilia, examines our own human nature through vignette sketches, and outlines the evolution of biophilic design. Principles, experiences, and attributes of the simplified biophilic framework from The Practice of Biophilic Design that she co-authored with the late Dr. Stephen Kellert (the pioneer of biophilic design) are reviewed. The theory and science supporting our innate connection to nature are discussed as is a salutogenic and ecomimetic approach to the design process. Those who take the course will have a better understanding of how to integrate biophilia holistically and ecologically into the design process.
