Overview
Case Studies of Biodiverse Green Roofs provides an overview of several green roof projects designed specifically to support or enhance biodiverse flora and fauna communities from across the United States. An examination of these projects explores the ways in which green roofs can be designed and implemented to support the development of biodiverse networks and reintroduce biodiversity to environments that have been destabilized or substantially altered from there original state. This course explores a number of design approaches for biodiversity on green roofs, and discusses the many contributing factors that go in to designing for biodiversity.
Learning Objectives
- To understand why protecting biodiversity is important
- To understand how native plant communities can inspire the design of green roofs that serve native biodiversity
- To learn about successful approaches to adapting native vegetation to green roofs with different moisture regimes
- To demonstrate how biodiverse green roofs have been designed to be sustainable and resilient
- To understand important relationships between plant selection and green roof design parameters

Your Instructor
Bruce Dvorak is an associate professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture & Urban Planning in the College of Architecture and a fellow in the Center for Health Systems and Design at Texas A&M. The Interdisciplinary Green Roof Research Group that he leads was established to better understand the application of green roofs to central Texas. He also led the creation of a living wall—a vegetated wall designed to achieve similar benefits of green roofs—at Texas A&M. He earned a bachelor of landscape architecture degree from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and a master of landscape architecture degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign.
